1. Give students one minute to scan the passage, then answer: How many parts are mentioned? What are they?
The New Course focuses on the Ss' abilities to gather information;deal with information;solve problems and the abilities to think and express in English. It first introduces the importance of the skin to our body, then introduces types of burns, characteristics of burns and certain steps of first aid treatments. It is hoped that through the passage, the Ss will know how to perform first aid procedures for burns and do first aid calmly during an emergency.

The information is organized according to the types of burns: first degree,second degree, third degree burns.

Intensive reading
1. Do Ex2 on Page35.Ask students to tell from which part the answers can be found.

2. Answer some questions:
Why is skin very important to our body?
(Skin protects us against dieases, poisons and the sun' harmful rays;keeps us warm or cool;prevents our body from losing water;it gives you sence of touch.)
Why should you put cold water on a burn?
(The cool water stops the burning process, stops the pain and prevents or reduces swelling.)
Why dosen't a third degree burnt hurt much?
(Because the nerves may be damaged.)
3. Read the part with the heading of First aid treatment and make a list of dos and don'ts.
Dos
Cool burns with running water.
Take off the clothing and jewellery near burns.
Place cool, clean, wet cloth on the first, second degree burns.
Dry the burned area gently.
Cover the burned area with dry, clean bandge and hold it in place with tape.
Don'ts
Take off colthing stuck to the burn.
Put cold water on the third degree burns.
Rub the burns, break the blisters.
Put butter, oil, ointments on burns.
